Hootie & the Blowfish sings to save the Charleston Crab Bank
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The City of Charleston’s own Hootie & the Blowfish is hosting a benefit concert Apr. 6th to raise $150,000 to aid in renourishing the Charleston Crab Bank.
The Crab Bank serves as a bird sanctuary of over 5,000 brown pelicans, black skimmers, American oystercatchers, and other migratory and threatened birds and contributes to coastal tourism, scientific research and outdoor education. Due to the wind, waves and harsh storms, the bank has been washing away.
In an effort to combat this, the Coastal Conservation League teamed up with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to raise money for the usage of sand dredged during the Charleston Harbor’s deepening project to rebuild the bank.
The concert will be an all-day music fest that features performances from local and nationally known musicians of various genres - from bluegrass to reggae to pop and hip hop. There will be eight bands who will each play a one hour set, including Hootie and the Blowfish who will take the stage at 8:30 p.m.
“I love playing music for a good cause,” said Darius Rucker, lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish. “I love the Lowcountry and I love our ocean, so I’m all about playing this to raise money to save something that means so much to our marine ecosystem.”
Food trucks will be at the event, including Roti Rolls, Home Team BBQ, Kickin Chicken, Juiced, BKed Donuts, King of Pops and Tricera coffee. Various vendors will also offer gelato, craft beer, wine, etc.
All the proceeds made from the tickets, food and vending sales will go toward the Crab Bank restoration.
Laura Cantrall, executive director of the Coastal Conservation League, is thrilled about the event as it raises money and awareness while bringing together our community.
“Not only will we have a chance to remind a lot of locals about the importance of Shem Creek and the Crab Bank, we will be raising money to save it. And we’ll be doing that while having a fabulous time listening to great music.”
The event will start at 10 a.m. and will go until 10 p.m.., with tickets costing $30 per person for the entire day, or $20 after 5 p.m. at Patriot’s Point.
